Judicial Experience
Since 2017, Judge Douglas has served as a Family Court Judge in Kanawha County, where he presides over cases involving child custody, child support, relocation, and family stability.
In this role, he has:
- Handled hundreds of family law cases involving parents, children, and grandparents
- Overseen enforcement of child support orders
- Helped recover more than $381,000 in delinquent child support for children during his tenure
- Worked daily with families navigating some of the most difficult moments of their lives
Family court decisions shape children’s futures, family relationships, and financial stability. Judge Douglas brings not only legal knowledge, but also compassion and experience to every decision.
Legal Career Across West Virginia
Before taking the bench, Judge Douglas practiced law for nearly 40 years, with a strong focus on family law and domestic relations after 1996.
During his legal career, he:
- Practiced in 44 of West Virginia’s 55 counties
- Represented parents, grandparents, and children in complex custody and divorce cases
- Built a statewide reputation in family law litigation
- Maintained law offices in Sutton and Charleston
In addition, Judge Douglas served as Prosecuting Attorney for Braxton County from 1985 to 1988, during which time he handled both jury and non-jury matters, providing him experience on both sides of the courtroom—as an advocate and as a public official.
This broad experience gives him a strong understanding of both rural and urban communities and the real-world impact of court decisions on families.
Appellate Experience & Legal Leadership
Judge Douglas has extensive experience working at the appellate level and contributing to the development of family law in West Virginia.
His professional background includes:
- Arguing more than 30 cases before the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals
- Admission to practice before:
- West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals
- United States Supreme Court
- Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals
- Federal District Courts in West Virginia
- State Court in Colorado
- Serving on statewide committees shaping family law rules and procedures
- Teaching and instructing attorneys through continuing legal education programs
He has also served in leadership roles within the West Virginia State Bar and its Family Law Committee, helping guide professional standards and legal education for attorneys practicing across the state.
This experience provides valuable perspective when reviewing trial court decisions and evaluating whether the law has been applied fairly and correctly.
