Meet Judge Jim Douglas

A Life Rooted in Fairness, Family, and West Virginia

Judge Jim Douglas’s life story is deeply rooted in West Virginia — shaped by hard work, family, and a lifelong respect for fairness and community.

He grew up along the banks of the Elk River in Ivydale, Clay County, in a small community known as “Little Italy.” His childhood home was a four-room house heated by a single coal stove, with no running water until he was sixteen years old. Baths were taken once a week using water heated in a wash tub, and winter snow sometimes drifted through the cracks in the walls. Like many families in rural West Virginia at the time, the Douglas family raised chickens, fished in the river, grew vegetables, and relied on hard work and ingenuity to get by.

Despite these challenges, education was always important. Jim walked across railroad tracks each day to attend junior high, earned academic honors, and graduated near the top of his high school class. As a student, he worked construction jobs, stocked shelves, and took night shifts to help pay for college, relying on scholarships, loans, and determination to continue his education.

He earned his bachelor’s degree with honors, followed by a master’s degree, and then returned to law school, graduating from West Virginia University College of Law in 1977. Along the way, he married, started a family, and built a life centered around service and responsibility.

Jim and his wife raised three children, all of whom pursued careers of service — including a paralegal, a physician, and an Assistant United States Attorney. Today, Judge Douglas is also the proud grandfather of six grandchildren.

After beginning his legal career in Sutton, West Virginia, Jim practiced law across much of the state, focusing heavily on family law and domestic relations. In 1984, he won election as Prosecuting Attorney in Braxton County by a single vote — an experience that reinforced his belief that every voice and every decision truly matters.

In 2016, he relocated full-time to Charleston and was elected Family Court Judge for Kanawha County, where he has served ever since. Over the course of his career, Judge Douglas has spent decades in courtrooms listening to families, weighing difficult decisions, and striving to treat every person who comes before the court with dignity and respect.

From his early years in rural Clay County to the bench in Kanawha County, Judge Jim Douglas’s life reflects the values shared by so many West Virginians — perseverance, fairness, and a deep commitment to community.
